The Oriental
Constantly winning awards for its impeccable service, The Oriental is one of the world’s most famous hotels. Founded in 1876 on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, The Oriental’s luxurious lodgings quickly became a favourite for visiting royalty, dignitaries and distinguished travellers, many of which left a lasting impression on the hotel. Of the 34 luxurious suites, ten are named and evocatively styled after prominent authors who famously resided here. There’s little need to venture outside as the Oriental has a range of dining options to suit every taste including some of the most renowned French, Chinese and Thai cuisine in the region. It also houses a world class spa.
The beautiful neo-classical teal and white façade of the original hotel building houses four highly acclaimed Author’s Suites and is protectively hidden within a lush tropical garden filled with orchids, ferns and palms. It exhibits an unassuming evocative ambience – both inside and out – which is timeless. The River and Garden Wings adjacent to the Author’s Wing house the other guestrooms, most of which benefit from the theoretic panorama of the busy Chao Phraya River. Beside the two swimming pools are sunbeds and fan-cooled ambalamas where you can luxuriate in the most serene comfort. Attendants proffer glasses of water, chilled lemon-scented face cloths and complimentary bowls of refreshing sorbet as you soak up the sun.
The Oriental houses a famous jazz bar, a collection of exquisite boutiques and some delicious casual dining options including a wide riverside terrace where sumptuous BBQs are served. The hotel has a complimentary shuttle boat service to take guests across the river to the spa, fitness centre, tennis courts, cooking school and authentic Thai Restaurant with alfresco dining pavilion. The boat also takes guests on scenic trips upriver and conveniently connects with the city’s Skytrain service.
